the clouds. there aren't any outside. clear skies throughout the bay area, even along the coast where they are pretty much just about every day. it's going to be hot inland today, mid to higher 90s. sunny at the ocean beaches, the 70s. >> right now the mid to higher 50s, 56 in oakland, 58 in san jose. not much of a difference from yesterday except to the north bay where things are warmer. as the morning goes on, it will be a good one. the winds are to the very much at all. nothing to speak of. and things will be warming up quite nicely today because there are no clouds along the coast and not much of a sea breeze either. things will be different for tomorrow. back to you. >> thanks. this morning police and volunteers will continue their tedious search through a landfill looking for the body of a man, he could be the fifth victim in a killing spree last week. christie smith is live in pittsburg where crews will be back at work later this morning.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there's a one-acre area inside this pittsburg landfill that police and volunteers have been searching through. this is searching by hand through tons of trash, so far they found nothing to confirm that the body of frederick sales is even there. but the 35-year-old nursing assistant could be the latest victim in this killing spree. hercules police launched their search of the landfill on friday, and this would now be day four. the ties are basically this, suspect efren valdemoro once worked at a hercules business park where one of the victim's cars was found. the home where the victims stayed is also nearby that business park, and trash from the business park ends up at this business mark. this weekend dozens of people came out to a vigil for all the

victims. >> we are not here to judge people for what they have done. >> reporter: valdemoro was shot and killed by the chp. investigators have said they believe that jealously may have played a role in the killings. but cindy tran's family believes the talk of any love triangle is untrue because she had broken off the relationship. the search resumes this morning at 8:00 a.m. reporting live near pittsburg, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. there is also a memorial fund set up for the sons of cindy tran, and if you'd like to contribute you can go to any wells fargo bank and just mention the cindy tran memorial fund. >> joran van der sloot said he tried to extort money from natalee holloway's parents to

make their life tough for five years. van der sloot confessed to taking the money from the family in return for revealing the location of her body. holloway was last seen alive with him in aruba in 2005. he has said he killed her then retracted his confession. he is also charged with the killing of a young woman in peru. the fight over furlough days is heading to the state supreme court. on wednesday, the high court is set to hear whether the governor has the right to force unpaid days on tens of thousands of state workers in 2009 and earlier this year. a ruling could affect the furloughs going on right now as well. the high court will hear arguments on three lawsuits that claim the governor's order violates a state law setting a 40-hour work week. the governor's lawyers have argued that the state constitution allows him to order furloughs to address the budget crisis. with millions of americans unemployed this labor day, the president is beginning a major push today to convince americans that he is trying to get them a paycheck. president obama will be in

milwaukee today to talk about the slow lovely. friday's job numbers showed unemployment went up slightly. jobs are being created but not fast enough to help those left jobless. >> the bottom line is small businesses are the engine of growth. government doesn't create the jobs. all we do is train people for the jobs. >> the president will hold another news conference this week, where the number one topic again will be jobs. a bay area police department will honor a fallen officer this morning. martinez police officer paul starzik was shot to death many 2008 when a gunman burst into a beauty salon looking for his estranged wife. even though he was mortally wounded, starzik shot and killed the gunman. this morning people are invited to attend a ceremony for officer starzik. it begins at 7:00 at the

fountain in front of martinez city hall. from 8:00 to noon, people can view photos and cards for the officer. the fifth u.s. service member has died in afghanistan this month. the violence is continuing this morning. in separate incidents, u.s. trooped battled the taliban militants for more than an hour in the kandahar province. the troops were in the violent kandahar province protecting a school compound under construction when militants attacked. workers say if the wheat crop is destroyed, it will add to pakistan's misery and prolong the crisis. weeks before the wheat planting season starts, farms are still under water and farmers are not sure if they drain in time if they miss the season, farmers will not be able to plant wheat

for another year and harvest until may of 2012. new this morning, germany is extending the life of its nuclear power plants. an overnight agreement laid the ground work to keep the plants open past their 2021 close date. protesters are upset over the safety of the plants and storage of nuclear waste, but some environmentalists will likely to applaud the plan which pushes the support of renewable energy. safety or the bare necessities, that's the issue at the transbay terminal. restrooms were left out of the plan for the temporary terminal and that's left commuters looking for a place to go. a spokesman for the project says it is all about security. after all b.a.r.t. closed bathrooms at stations after 9/11. locals say this means trouble for them. they see an increase in homeless people outside and customers just looking to use the bathroom. the temporary terminal will be used for the next seven years.

health leaders are almost encouraging everyone to get the flu vaccine. the shot will fight off the swine flu and the seasonal flu, so people won't have to try to get two shots. the cdc is suggesting everyone over six months and older get the shot, not just those considered at risk. the shot has hit pharmacies and doctors offices early this year, a sharp contrast to the delays and shortages last year. teens will love the next story. the top health officer in kansas says high schoolers need more sleep even if it means starting classes later. adults need to do more to prevent what they call teenage sleep deprivation. a survey shows only about 15% of teens get 8 1/2 hours of sleep on school nights, and they actually need nine or ten, more than school-aged kids. the solutions, one of them? pushing back the start times of schools to improve performance and attendance. >> a couple weeks ago, we talked

the unofficial end of summer. thousands of people are expected to do just that, spend their labor day at the beach. if this weekend is an indication, two recent sightings of white sharks here in the bay area are not enough to keep people out of the water. last week surfers claim they saw a great white shark attacking a sea lion in pacifica. there was a similar sighting in sonoma county last thursday, an then a few weeks ago a kayaker was attacked off the coast of san mateo county. experts tell us sightings of many varieties of sharks are common this time of year along the northern california coast and in the bay. >> it's not uncommon for them to come into the bay, particularly underneath the golden gate bridge into the mouth of the bay, they will feed off sea lions. >> experts say shark attacks on humans are very rare and that the recent shark sightings should serve as a reminder for people who go into the water that they need to be careful. the flight attendant who

snagged headlines when he told off a plane full of passengers and bailed out on a chute is trying to clear things up. his lawyer said despite of what you may have heard he was not fired from his job but resigned. slater was suspended after his a antics but didn't leave jetblue until this week. >> you're local oil change garage will not like this story probably. but we bet you will. chris has an inside tip on how you can skip the oil change and save money, maybe even the environment. >> when it comes to changing the oil in our cars, many, if not most of us, are like this guy. >> i change my oil every 3,000, just to make sure it's running tip top. >> reporter: but based on new

ours to try to excite the group, and it seems to have worked. this pairings of a couple of our birds with theirs have produced chicks this year. >> the new chicks are so popular two male flamingos are squabbling now over one of the babies, both trying to feed the baby, and the poor thing is stuffed, according to zoo officials. to celebrate the new arrivals the zoo is giving guests who wear pink a dollar off the admission price this holiday weekend. >> i wonder how soon they'll be pink-pink. there's a showdown over gun rights and advertising on the bay area's biggest transit agency. you may have seen this ad for "the other guy" starring will ferrell and mark wahlberg. when a gun right's group noticed the post eers were altered to sw instead of guns pepper spray, the group made an ad showing a woman holding a gun. the gun rights group calls it a

coup to avoid a lawsuit. the box office numbers are not official this morning, but it looks like "the american" will rein supreme. the georgia clooney thriller pulled in about $13 million between friday and sunday. "takers," showed more stamina than expected. currently in second with $11.5 million, looking at a likely $14 million to finish out the holiday weekend. the revenge thriller "machete" went into the weekend as the expert's favorite for the top spot is currently in third with just $11 million and will likely finish with around $14 million, as well. the world's shortest living man measures just 27 1/2 inches, which is just slightly taller than carry-on luggage. his parents were never given a reason for their son's size, though he was born weighing just three pounds.

bright sunny skies until 5:00, 6:00 tonight. cooling tomorrow 10, 15 degrees from where we are today. today, still in the higher 50s or so, just about where we were this time yesterday. the winds are quite calm. as you can see, along our coast, there are no clouds or marine layers to speak of. there's an off-shore flow of the winds in the north. that's bringing us toasty temperatures. i'll have more coming up in a bit. >> thank you. in just a few hours, investigator also start day four of their search through a pittsburg landfill looking for the body of a missing man. he may be the fifth victim of a killing spree. christie smith is live at the landfill with the latest on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are told investigators will be back out at that landfill in pittsburg this morning in about 90 minutes. they're focusing specifically on a one acre area that they cordoned off inside the landfill where they believe the body of

frederick sales may be. he could very well be the fifth victim tied to this bizarre killing spree last week. the 35-year-old nursing aide has not been seen since august 26th. that was the time his father was beat ton death by efren valdemoro at the hercules home they rented from valdemoro's girlfriend. an suv driven by one of the victims in all this was found at a hercules business park and valdemoro once worked at that business park and trash there ends up at the keller canyon landfill. this weekend there was vigil for all of the victims of this including valdemoro's girlfriend, cindy tran. >> she's a very devoted mother. >> it's heartbreaking. it's very heartbreaking. >> reporter: efren valdemoro was shot and killed by the chp. he is really the central figure in all this killing spree.

there were reports that investigators believed that perhaps a love triangle may have set him off, involving cindy tran and one of the sales', either the father or the son, but cindy tran's family says that is untrue and she broke off the relationship. the search may go on through at least wednesday. reporting live near pittsburg, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. the three cal grads jailed in iran on spy charges are getting the support of a prominent member of the islamic community. they have been in an iranian prison for more than a year now after they were arrested crossing the border between iraq. an islamic scholar is asking iran to release the hikers as the muslim holy month of ramadan comes to a close. he wrote a three-page letter to

ayatollah khamenei pleaing for their release. a livermore father is accused of stabbing his own son 11 times. police say gary gomez took his wife, son and two of his son's friends fishing at bethany reservoir around midnight sunday. he reportedly got upset when one of the friends said they had to go home around 2:00 in the morning and ended up getting into a fight with his son. he stabbed the boy at least 11 times and his wife was stabbed at least once when she tried to stop the fight. gomez also tried to puncture the family van's tire as the wife tried to drive away. none of the injuries are life threatening. the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer is due in court this week. 20-year-old andrew barrientos is scheduled to be formally charged in an oakland court on tuesday. police say barrientos shot todd young several times in oakland august 27th when young

tried to arrest him. police arrested barrientos just 30 feet from the mexican border after investigators tracked him through his cell phone. young is now recovering from a string of surgeries. in about a half hour, some big names in california politics will be kicking off a voting campaign and labor day breakfast. barbara boxer, jerry brown are among those that will be there. hundreds of union members from dozens of l. a. county unions ae also invited. this is the kickoff of the campaign season. president obama will be in milwaukee today and in cleveland, ohio on wednesday. find out what the president is expected to say coming up in a live report from washington in about ten minutes. in san francisco, lawmakers are considering a proposal to increase taxes on alcohol.

the board of supervisors is set to vote on a plan that would place a fee on alcohol distributors. the plan would add a couple of cents to the equivalent of a bottle of beer, glass of wine or well drink. the idea is to cover some $17 million in unreimbursed health care costs related to alcohol abuse. the fee would apply to wholesalers who sell alcohol in san francisco. critics say the cost will be passed on to consumers, which will hurt business. trying to keep the streets safe this labor day, the chp has amped up patrols for the holiday weekend and so far they have had more trouble this year compared to last. as of 6:00 this morning, california officers arrested 990 drunk drivers, that is 67 more than the same time last year. deaths are also up on our highways. eight people have died over the labor day weekend. one of those deaths happened here in the bay area. former hewlett-packard ceo mark hurd is apparently landing on his feet.

just weeks after owe was ousted from the top spot at hp, hurd is in talks to take over a top executive post at oracle. a source says oracle is not vying for the ceo job held by oracle founder larry ellison but another position. hurd resigned from hp in early august when an investigation showed he failed to disclose a personal relationship with a contractor. she later filed a sexual harassment claim against hurd which was settled out of court. this week marks the start of -- the start of -- >> they will start the -- >> kris is reading the story. the kill effort at the bottom of the oil leak site in the gulf of mexico. this week starts a new phase. a live look, almost a mile under water where bp is beginning the process of permanently plugging the leaking oil well. at the same time it is trying to figure out what caused the spill in the first place. >> i think of their families and

each one of them deserve this. these guys deserve this. we need to find out not only for them and their memories but for the industry i know they would want it no other way. bp says once the bottom kill is complete there is very little danger of another oil leak in the gulf. today is the 140th day since the deep water well explosion. also this morning the pakistani taliban is claiming responsibility for today's suicide bombing that killed 17 people, including police officers. dozens of others were hurt. the bomber set off a car bomb in an alley behind a police station in northwest pakistan. the blast shattered the station and nearby homes and killed four children headed to school. the taliban says it is targeting police because they encourage people to set up militias to fight the militants. more than a dozen landslides killed at least 38 people in guatemala over the weekend. about 50 people are believed to be buried under the rubble. torrential rains saturated the ground and unleashed the slide. in one case, rescue crews were pulling people out of a slide

got trapped themselves when the mountain above them cracked sending a second wave of rock and mud. miners in chile have sent more than a month underground. relatives of the 33 miners marked the one-month anniversary outside the mine yesterday. engineers are drilling a shaft into the mine but that could take two to four months to reach the miners. miners are speaking to their families through a video conferencing system and crews are set sending them food and clothing through a small shaft. when the miners are finally resc rescued, one of them might not be as eager as the rest to come out. his wife was keeping vigil outside the mine when she met another woman praying there. they got to talking and found out they were praying for the same man. the women got into a fight and the wife tore down a poster with the miner's photo that the mistress had set up. the mistress taped the poster back up and beneath several poems and prayers she had dedicated to him she signed to senora, which means your wife.

tracie potts is live in washington with a preview of what the president is going to say. tra tracie, we are listening very carefully here because our jobless rate is worse than the national average. >> it is. close to 11% in the south bay area, 11.5% in san francisco. people in california need jobs. they're going to be listening to this new plan today, president obama expected to pitch $50 billion for infrastructure upgrades, fixing roads, rails, airports. he said he wants to finance this for creating a new permanent infrastructure bank and pay for it by rolling back oil and gas tax credits. that's today. on wednesday he travels to cleveland where he talks about another idea he has already pitched and is urging congress to extend tax credits, new research tax credits to small businesses. the idea being if small businesses get a tax break, they will be in a better financial position to create jobs.

>> reporter: this is a piece of a song and video that one of our producers found floating around facebook, you are watching a 28-year-old who took off on a 40-day tour of the country living out of his car along the way. that was just part of the story. here to tell us the rest of it is tony himself, here with us via skype. fantastic song. >> thank you. >> what inspired it? >> well, you know, basically people ask all the time what were you doing all over the country? what happened was, you know, i was a sportscaster in columbus, which is my hometown, columbus, ohio. like many people in today's economy, i had been laid off my job. for me, it was a dream job. it's all the i wanted to do. i was content there. when you get laid off from your dream job, you kind of ask what's next. i asked some friends, and they say you do what you always wanted to do but you couldn't do

because you had a job. for me, one of my biggest passions and hobbies growing up has been playing music. so i literally made a tour for myself. i looked around the internet, found open mics all over the country and decided to go on tour. >> i love it. so you wrote this song that you sing, and you talk about specific parts of the country but you went to those parts to film your own video. >> right. i basically knew i was going to take a nationwide trip and i wrote a song specifically for the sake of making a video. i wanted something that would go viral on youtube, and i guess maybe it's working a bit so far. >> one of the spots you hit was right here in the bay area. you went to the golden gate bridge, there's a great line in the song about the san francisco bay, but along the way you got people, anybody you could find to shoot the video for you? >> yeah. most of the trip was done by

myself. a lot of times i had to ask perfect strangers. that shot where the pretty girl in san francisco bay, it took like an hour to find someone who would be willing to be in the shot with me. eventually that woman is engaged, she lives in ireland. she was there with her fiance visiting, he offered her up for the video. he is actually holding the camera there shooting that shot. there's a million great stories about that kind of stuff from the road trip and they're on my blog. >> so you even started a blog. there's the picture we're talking about. it's unique, fun to watch. what now for you? >> while i was on the road, i was looking for sports casting jobs, and i landed one in north carolina on a part-time basis. that continues. i want to carry music as far as i can. i don't feel i got the greatest stage presence in the world but i love writing songs. i know i can write songs. i would love do it on a higher

level. >> i beg to differ because you're doing great. >> tell us about your sister, at the very end of the video it's dedicated to her. what happened? >> as i was in seattle, the furthest from home i could be in the contiguous 48, i got a phone call from home that she has been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, there's only 100 cases in the united states. there's no cure. she is in no short-term peril, but long-term it's serious. on my website, 40daytour.com you can make a donation to vanderbilt university med center, they're the best in the country for finding a cure for this sort of thing. anybody who has the means to do so, we -- my whole family would appreciate it. >> of course. you're turning it into a good cause. we wish the very best to her.

police and volunteers have been searching. this is now day four.tons of des to go through. they believe frederick sales could be the fifth victim of a killing spree last week. so far they have not found sign of him. the 35-year-old nursing assistant hasn't been seen since august 26th, when the 35-year-old's victim was beaten to death by efren valdemoro, who was suspicious of an affair with his girlfriend, cindy tran. valdemoro is also tied to the deaths of two vallejo women. this weekend dozens of people came out to a vigil for all the victims in this. candles were lit for everyone, including efren valdemoro, who was shot and killed by the chp in richmond last week after a high-speed chase. the search resumes this morning at 8:00.
